Android :: Selection List Cut Off In AutoCompleteTextView In Dialog

Jul 18, 2010

I have a dialog window that covers 1/3 of the entire screen height and is displayed on top of my activity. The dialog holds two AutoCompleteTextView fields.

The problem I'm facing is that when the user starts typing something into the AutoCompleteTextView, the list with all suggestions only shows up to the bottom end of the dialog, but doesn't go beyond that even the list is longer. It looks like it's cut off. (screenshot left)

Only after I long-press an item from the suggestion list, the list will be shown in full length. (screenshot right)

Screenhot is at: http://img704.imageshack.us/i/dialogdropdown.png/

How to fix this behaviour so that the list shows in full length right from the beginning, when the user starts typing something?

Code-wise there's nothing special, all I do is:

CODE:..........

One workaround idea is to somehow dispatch a motion event to simulate a touch (but then not selecting though) one of the list items. Any concrete idea in code for a solution.

Android :: Spinner Selection Box On Activity And Dialog

Jun 22, 2010

I have a spinner selection box on my activity, but now I want to remove the spinner from the main view and make the selection available by an option from the menu button. How do I get the dialog the spinner shows if I click it without having the spinner? Currently I fill the spinner using a SimpleCursorAdapter like this:

Cursor c = db.fetchAllSets();
SimpleCursorAdapter adapter = new SimpleCursorAdapter(this android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item, c, new String[] { DatabaseAdapter.SET_KEY_NAME }, new int[] { android.R.id.text1 });
adapter.setDropDownViewResource(android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item);
mSetsSpinner.setAdapter(adapter);

So now I'm planning to remove the spinner from my activity, add a new button to the menu and in the onOptionsItemSelected(...) show a dialog with the list of available selection - just the way it is right now after clicking the spinner object.

General :: How To Disable Dropdown List Auto-opening In AutoCompleteTextView

Mar 19, 2012

In my android app I use AutoCompleteTextView and refresh items list for each 5 seconds. Refreshing is working, when I call notifyDataSetChanged(). But when I type here something and it'll give me the list of matching items and then I close it manually, when another thread is refreshing the list and calling notifyDataSetChanged() dropdown list is showing automatically (even if I closed it before). And it's really annoying, because if list is long it takes whole screen and after closing it'll appear in another 5 secounds. I tried dismissDropDown() just after calling notifyDataSetChanged(), but it doesn't have any effect. It looks like dropdown is showing with a little delay. It's also not good way to fix it, because if user hasn't closed the list it'll close after a refresh. Also tried to take focus away - still no effect.

So I need a method to: update my items list (via notifyDataSetChanged()) without automatically showing dropdown list, but if dropdown was already showed don't close it.

Android :: Returning Values From Multiple Selection List View

Aug 12, 2010

Edit: Okay, I found a solution. Don't know that it's the proper solution, but it does work correctly. Added to the code below. I'm trying to allow a user to select a number of directories from a checklist, and return them upon clicking a "Submit" button. Here's a snippet of my code. It populates the List View with all the directories on /sd card/, and for the initial selection (of however many I pick) when I submit, the log shows the correct choices returned. However, if I un check an item, and click "Submit" again, it still shows as if all are selected. Do I need to write a handler to un check an item? I thought that was taken care of by the choice Mode selection?

Android :: Catching Selection Events For Custom List Items

Nov 3, 2010

I thought I knew how to catch list selection events in Android and then I regained consciousness. In my situation, I have a ListView that I populate with a custom view, all of the same class (let's call it the NewsChannel() class). NewsChannel consists of a LinearLayout of ImageViews and TextViews. When the list is displayed, the user may select a NewsChannel item in the list; I want to find out which list item was selected. Also, I registered an onClickListener to one of the TextViews and that works fine: when the text is clicked on, an activity is launched which is looking for the position of the NewsChannel item in the list. So, here's what my code looks like:

1. Registering the onClickListener in the ListActivity:
public class NewsListActivity extends ListActivity {...
public void onCreate(Bundle icicle) { super.onCreate(icicle);
setContentView(R.layout.news_list_format); ListView lv = getListView();
lv.setOnItemClickListener(new OnItemClickListener()
{ public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View view,
int position, long id) {
// When clicked, show a toast with the TextView text item_index = position;
Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "item clicked = " + position,
Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); }}); ...

2. The layout for the ListView associated with NewsListActivity:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/ android"
android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:background="@drawable/wpaper_tile" >
<ListView android:id="@id/android:list" android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:dividerHeight="15dp" android:divider="@android:color/transparent"
android:cacheColorHint="@android:color/transparent" android:scrollbars="none" />

<FrameLayout android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="55dp"
android:layout_centerHorizontal="true" android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:background="#88000000"/>
<ImageView android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_centerHorizontal="true"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" android:src="@drawable/phonetop_bg" /> </RelativeLayout>

3. The NewsChannel layout:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <RelativeLayout xmlns:
android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/ android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<include layout="@layout/news_heading_format"
android:id="@+id/news_heading_header"/>
<ImageView android:id="@+id/news_channel_image" android:layout_width="88dp"
android:layout_height="66dp" android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_below="@id/news_heading_header" android:padding="10dp" />

<TextView android:id="@+id/news_channel_text" android:lines="4"
android:inputType="textMultiLine" android:layout_toRightOf="@id/news_channel_image"
android:layout_below="@id/news_heading_header" android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"/> </RelativeLayout>

When I run the app, the ItemClickListener is never called. However, if NewsChannel were of a simpler type, say, a single ImageView or TextView embedded in the layout, the callback does get called. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? My whole goal is simply to let the activity launched by NewsChannel (not shown) to find out which instance of NewsChannel it was launched from.

Android :: Dialog Box Full Of List Items Not Appearing

Jun 8, 2009

When your intent kicks knocked on the head by the OS and then restored / recreated (for example when you slide out the keyboard on the G1) if you have a ListView populated with items in an activity they appear after the recreate. However, if you have a dialog box full of list items and do the same steps, the ListView comes back up empty when the window is redrawn after the slide.

Is this an Android bug? My list is a pain in the neck to pack into a bundle, it consists of Address objects, and there might be ten of them. Am I doing something "un-android?" I'm thinking of just dimissing the dialog when this happens. But calling dismiss in onRestore (for the dialog) doesn't seem to work.

Android :: AutoCompleteTextView And SimpleCursorAdapter

Apr 14, 2009

I am trying to connect a AutoCompleteTextView with a SimpleCursorAdapter, which narrows down the selection of a list of words, when the user starts typing.

Following some other posts here, I've come up with the following code, but it doesn't work. I defined a FilterQueryProvider runQuery() method for the SimpleCursor Adapter, but when I use the debugger in the code, the response from the ContentResolver.query((0 method call is null.

I think the problem is that there is no relationship between the CONTENT_URI and the SQL database, but I can't be sure.

Android :: How To Use AutoCompleteTextView With SimpleCursorAdapter

Apr 8, 2009

I have an application that involves reading a text dictionary file with about 7000 entries, and allowing the user to choose one of these. My first approach was to allow the user to select one of these by using a AutoCompleteTextView together with ArrayAdapter<String>. This works, but is very slow (~10 seconds to update the word list each time the user enters a character to narrow down the choice).

I was wondering how to rework it so that I could use a database using a SimpleCursorAdapter instead. In other words, to hope that a SQL database could provide a more efficient ordering and access for the elements. Is this the best way to do it? I've also seen several references to SQLiteDatabase, but don't know which one to use.

I found this code fragmant consisting of an extended SimpleAdapter. http://sacoskun.blogspot.com/2008/08...leadapter.html<http://sacoskun.blogspot.com/2008/08/autocompletetextview-with-simple...>

Unfortunately, this is not a complete worked out example. Could someone forward me a more complete example? I've found lots of code fragments, but no code that shows how to initialise the SimpleCursorAdapter contents, or how it works together with the AutoCompleteTextView.
