Android :: Reason For High Memory Usage In Android MapView

Nov 11, 2010

I found the GC kicks in frequently freeing memory in my map activity, I couldn't trace out the reason and this happens when map start constructing titles i.e when we slide the map. And eventually the activity stops to force quit due to memory out of bound exception. The activity points the geo points of various location stored in the arraylist.

Based on everyone's feedback I might have to return the Moment for a third time.

Android :: High Data Usage?

Sep 26, 2010

So we have 2 Incredibles on a family plan and with this chatter of eventual data caps, I just was curious and took a look at our recent data usage on myverizon to see where we stand.I average about 5gb a month while my significant other is around 20gb! I am a moderately heavy web user (although I don't really have anyone to compare to, but I check the internet a lot during the day out of sheer boredom at work) and he by all means is not.Can somebody explain what exactly eats data and how it works? We are mostly just curious and are guessing it's an app. But *what* is doing it? Like does it draw data from the internet or something? Is that app updating or refreshing? The only thing I know about data is like if you refresh a page on the internet, then data is used. I refreshed a website twice and my usage according to 3d watchdog jumped about 1mb. Is that normal? Is it also normal for there to be data usage while your phone is asleep?

HTC Legend :: High Standby Data Usage

Aug 23, 2010

Not sure if many of you have been following threads out there about very high data usage on standby - my experience.I went from using 5mb - 10mb a day to 100mb/day.Unbelieveable.I tried searching for everything I could to figure it out - all the way from Location Setting swithed on to Facebook having a Calendar sync'ing glitch where it perpetually sync'd - never stopped.Hence racked up Mb's.The problem, I believe, for my phone was the Gmail constantly sync'ing. I guess i have a few emails with large attachments - 3-5mbs. I thought once it sync'd it to my phone, it would not reload them. I had sync on every hour - so every hour - 5mbs were used.Needless to say, i have stopped the auto sync of my Gmail its on manual now, and better yet i will just be using IMAP instead of Push email, and the problem has been solved.

I am now back to normal use of 5mbs per day 10mb on the high side. And that is with Twitter constant, internet, Push to Talk, and World War game to name a few.If you dont follow your data usage, i highly recommend you do. There are horror stories out there of people having to pay $1000 extra. I will be owing prob an extra $50.00 or more due to this issue.(In Canada here on Bell Carrier monthly limit is 500mb) I recommend downloading 3G watchdog - really good at monitoring data.Anyway, just wanted to share this story, as I dont think there has been an HTC Legend thread. And that is the phone I have.

Android :: High Battery Usage - But No Use Details Listed

Oct 23, 2009

An hour after my G1 phone was fully charged, the "Battery Usage" showed me that my game had used 20% of the battery usage.  Except, I never ran my game (I had run the game before starting the charge).  I checked TasKiller, and it didn't list my game as running (my game also doesn't run any services).  When I clicked on the details of the battery usage for my game, it didn't list anything under the "Use details" section. Is it possible to use battery, but not have anything listed under the "Use details" section?

Motorola Milestone :: High Standby Data Usage Solution

Mar 7, 2010

I've noticed a few people have complained about high standby data usage.. ie when you leave the phone on a desk, with nothing streaming, you still manage to use up 1-2mb per hour (as I was!). This is a big problem for people moving from something like a blackberry where it was hard to use up a lot of data even if you tried.I tried disabling as much as possible to see what was causing the problem (NetSentry was great for tracking usage but of course can't tell you which programs/services are using it up), and after exhausting all ideas I tried deleting the two non-GMail email accounts I had. On was set up as push Exchange, and the other a 15-minute polling POP account. I have to assume it was the Exchange that was the problem, but I can't be sure. In any case, my usage dropped from about 4MB over 3 hours to about 12kB for the last 3 hours since I disabled the accounts. In conclusion, email can be more of a problem than you think! I'm going to forward my other accounts through my GMail to see if that works better.

Motorola Droid :: Memory Usage - Internal Vs Card

Apr 12, 2010

As I did some research I found out, and correct me if I am wrong, that most of the applications that we download on the Droid go against the internal memory, and that the applications are not being loaded onto the memory card. I move to the Droid from Blackberry for this sole reason, thinking the Droid had it the opposite way, that the applications were being loaded on the memory card, and not the internal memory. This concept of loading the programs onto the internal memory, was putting a hurt on my Blackberry, where I had to give up programs in order for it to run faster. I am now concerned after finding out that the Droid has the same concept, that this will eventually happen with my Droid, and that I may have to give up programs for it to run fater as well. If this is true to what I am saying, that the applications are on the internal memory and eating away on it, then I am hoping someone would develop a program where as we can take our progams and move them over to the memory card so that it will free up the internal memory, other wise I am off to seek aphone that runs windows, I do belive they do have this concept that I want. I should have done my homework!

Android :: Memory Usage Profiling OpenGL Application?

Aug 23, 2010

How do I find out how much memory my openGL application is using at any given moment, including sounds, textures, and everything else? I've been wrestling with DDMS for hours and all it seems to show me is basic object allocation counts.  I must be missing something, but I haven't had any luck searching. LONG VERSION: I've got an otherwise operational beta Android game which crashes out after a while on my device (Droid X). I'm fairly sure my problem is that my textures are not being properly cleared from memory. I'd like to confirm this fact before I start blindly making changes. My game does fairly frequent level transitions. During these transitions I typically dump a texture file, wait a bit, then load a new one.

Over time the application performance degrades.  After 10 or so transitions frame rate starts to take a nose dive.  10 or so more and it usually dies.  Prior to dying I see log messages like this: 08-23 12:26:58.038: DEBUG/Cursor(1265): fillWindow is not executed because Cursor object is closed. 08-23 12:27:27.186: INFO/ActivityManager(1239): Low Memory: No more background processes. And then eventually: 08-23 12:27:46.952: INFO/ActivityManager(1239): Process com.thup.lunchbox (pid 4927) has died. There are no specific error messages of any sort.  I've got lots of ideas for things to try to fix this (e,g, glDeleteTextures), but I really want a way to measure before I start trying to fix.

Android : Profiling Bitmap Memory Usage To Optimize?

Jan 15, 2010

My game - Tower Raiders - is continually floating fairly close to running out of bitmap memory. Unfortunately, I haven't found good information on profiling bitmap memory usage so that I can optimize / make informed decisions / add new content if it allows / etc.

I'm aware that bitmap memory is not heap memory, as it's allocated natively. But that it is accounted for somehow in the VM and influences garbage collection. Maybe it's an oversimplification of how bitmap memory works - but I'd like to find a tool etc or some way of determining I as the game is running right now, there are no more than X bytes of usable bitmap memory remaining.

So, if anyone has any advice etc that would help me in these respects I would greatly like to hear about a workflow for this.

Motorola Droid :: Memory Usage Works When Open Running Services Tab?

Nov 14, 2010

how the memory works on my orginial motorola droid (2.2). When I open the running services tab I see this on the bottom:

Other: 54MB in 3 Avail:19MB+45MB in 7

I'm wondering if someone can explain what this means. I assume this is all coming out of the 256MB of Ram the droid has? I was also installing app's and got a memory low warning aftering firefox beta that was 14MB in size. I gather that almost all the apps do not support installing to the SD card yet if ever. So of like the 100 apps I have installed is it likley that they are all taking up room of the RAM of the 256MB? I'm also wondering if there is a good app that shows you how much of your RAM is full with apps, so you know when you need to uninstall some etc. Like you are using 200MB out of 256MB or whatever.

Android :: Is Droid X Enough Of A Reason To Go Verizon?

Jul 5, 2010

I am a fan of T-Mobile. I like the ability to pop out my SIM card, and pop it in the next phone of choice, bringing everything with me. This is especially handy due to the fact that I work on a naval base tha does not permit cameraphones of any kind. I like T-Mobile's customer service. They are always polite and know what the hell they are talking about. I'm pondering getting a Galaxy S for T-Mobile.On the other hand, Verizon's new Droid X looks amazing. I love that 4.3" screen. (had the HTC HD2 with the 4.3". Loved it) I would mention the processor and other features, but it seems these two phones, minus the physical keyboard I don't care about, are close to par.Verizon, I must begrudgingly say, also have better coverage where I live. This Droid almost looks appealing emough to stay with Verizon and upgrade. So, do I get the phone I'll probably like more, or get an almost as nice phone with the ability to remove my SIM and have a crappy phone at least at work. ( keep in mind that I have access to a landline at all times at work, anyway.)
