Android :: Input Method Manager - Keyboard (virtual / Soft)

Oct 8, 2009

Inside TextView.java, I have the following code.

InputMethodManager imm = (InputMethodManager)getContext ().getSystemService(Context.INPUT_METHOD_SERVICE); Log.d("tag", " fullscreenmode test: " + imm.isFullscreenMode());

and also, InputMethodManager imm = InputMethodManager.peekInstance(); Log.d("tag", imm.isFullscreenMode());

My phone is in landscape mode. My application has an EditText. My keyboard(virtual/soft) is not visible. I expect the above codes (written inside TextView.java) to print false. But it prints true. How is that possible?

Android :: Virtual Keyboard Input Focus With Webviews

Mar 15, 2010

I'm having a very very strange problem with input and textarea html tags in a WebView. Basically they never seem to gain input focus with the virtual keybaord. which shows a single input box. There is now way just tapping around the screen to get it to accept input. Strangely, if I use my trackball on my G1 to select the field, I can eventually get focus and type in it. For trackball-less things like the N1, that doesn't help though.

How do I get the soft keyboard to load for this View? I haven't found a ton of documentation regarding the new input framework.

Android :: Allow Only Decimal Numeric Input / Use Phone Soft Keyboard?

Apr 21, 2010

I am trying to do something that I thought would be simple, yet I still haven't found the right approach. I have a Edit Text field that should only accept unsigned decimal entries. Using android:input Type="number Decimal" in my layout xml file achieves this, however the soft keyboard that is raised with this input Type is the standard keyboard but just uses the alternate view with the number row on top. This is far from ideal for a field that only allows numbers. A much better soft keyboard for numeric entry is the "phone" one. It has all of the numbers and a decimal. Perfect!! Well, except that for the life of me I cannot figure out how to use both the phone keyboard AND allow only numeric entry. I've tried everything I can think of but if I use the phone soft keyboard then the input field also allows things like "(" and any of the other symbols available on that keyboard. Is there any way to get the nice big numeric buttons of the phone keyboard along with only allowing decimal entry? Android :: How To Know Whether SIP (Soft Input Panel - Keyboard View) Is Showing - Not?

Apr 27, 2009

I wonder it is possible to know whether SIP is showing to user or not. A user application(Activity) can show or hide the Soft Input through the Input Method Manager. There is some APIs to handle the SIP. But I can't find API to know status of SIP(it is on showing or hiding).

When SIP is showing to user. It disturbs the UI of the Activity. So Activity should know about the information related with upper case. How can I know that?

Android :: Input Field With Custom Input Method

I could create a custom IME, but (as far as I know) that would have to be set by the user as the system-wide input method. Is there a way to implement an input method and bind it to a specific input field?

Android :: Virtual/soft Buttons For Home - Menu - Back - Search - Always On Top

Jun 9, 2010

How can I make an app or maybe service that looks like (Nexus One touch buttons) for the navigation keys (Home, menu,Back, Search)

The buttons should always be visibly and always stay on top and send the command to the app thats running.

Someone have ideas and sample codes how to do that?

*I see an app with name (Smart Taskmanager) wich always detect when you touch the right side of the screen and then detect when you slide the finger to left.

So I think its possible, with this function I think its possible to implementate the code to simulate the (Home, Meny, Back, Search) buttons.

*I also see and test an app wich show a "cracked display" always ontop so that tecnic maybe shold be useful to always show the buttons/bitmanp on top.

Thoose function, to show the button and catch the "touch event" and send the event to the active program, thats what i dont can figure out how to do.

Motorola Droid X :: APP - ROOT - Keyboard - Keyboard Manager - Dual Keyboard - Portrait - Landscape Switch

Nov 10, 2010

I tried it and it works so far.

Dev = ne0fhyk from XDA.

From the XDA forum: Link to app page = [APP][ROOT/Keyboard] Keyboard Manager - Dual keyboard: Portrait/landscape switch - xda-developers

Verbage:

Keyboard Manager allows you to customize what keyboard (input method) appear on input based on your phone orientation.
It displays the keyboards you have enabled on your android device, and let you select one per orientation (landscape/portrait).
As your phone switch orientation, the app automatically switch the keyboard.

Requirements:
- Rooted android device (app was tested on Samsung captivate 2.1)
- Root Explorer app, or similar app that allows you to edit the permissions of a file.

To install:
1- Download the app (KeyboardManager.apk) on your device sdcard.
2- Using Root Explorer, move the apk file to /system/app
3- Using Root Explorer, edit the file permissions like below:
-- User: 'Read/Write' checked
--Group: 'Read' checked
--Others: 'Read' checked
4- Exit Root Explorer

The app should be visible in your launcher as 'Keyboard Manager'

Update:
- Added option to disable notification icon
-' start on boot' feature is disabled because it's not yet complete and tested... Sorry for the confusion

Bugs:
-On certain applications (i.e: Messaging on Samsung Captivate), the input window occasionally freeze on orientation switch. Exiting the app, and resuming should fix it.

The app is still in development.

Unfortunately, Camera has stopped.I tried various solutions. I was thinking [HIGH]Menu->Manage apps->All tab->Camera->Clear data[/HIGH].should be able to solve the problem, but failed as well.

The only thing now I can think of is whether I need to change armeabi-v7a to armeabi or not? Should I use armeabi specifically for the emulator, rather than the real phones?

Android :: How To Develop A Soft Keyboard - HTTP Connections To Synchronize Keyboard Data With A Cloud DB And Other Phones

I would like to play around with some ideas and develop a soft keyboard for Android to replace the default one.

Is there any general information about soft keyboard development for Android out there?

Any best practices or guidelines?

Can I do with my keyboard application pretty much anything I could do with a normal Android application?
Can I do HTTP connections to synchronize keyboard data with a cloud DB and other phones I have?
Can I open other windows/screens from a key press, e.g. to display a custom input interface different to a normal QWERTY one. If that doesn't work, can I use a pop-up dialog instead?

Android : How To Hide Soft Input Like Using BACK Buton?

Jul 11, 2009

In my app I have AutoCompleteTextView and "search" button. When user clicks "enter" or "search" an Intent is fired and new Activity is started. But in that "new" Activity SoftInput should be invisible, so I make ((InputMethodManager)getSystemService (INPUT_METHOD_SERVICE)).hideSoftInputFromWindow(this.getCurrentFocus ().getWindowToken(), InputMethodManager.HIDE_NOT_ALWAYS); But when user clicks BACK and returns to activity with form he is unable to show soft input back by touching AutoCompleteTextView. He mus use trackball to select "search" button and than touch ACTextView. Bud when he is in "form" activity first time, shows soft input by touching AutoCompleteTextView and presses BACK button he is able to show soft Input by touching field. How can I hide soft input "correctly" (so it can be shwed back in intuitive way?) or hide it like BACK button does?

Android :: Static Method Calls To Derived Types Over Virtual Implementations?

Jul 8, 2010

I have class A, with methods foo and bar, that are implemented by A1 and A2. The functionality in both A1 and A2 is the same. In other words:
public class A {
public int foo() { return 0; };
public int bar() { return 1; };
} class A1 extends A {
public int AnotherFooFunction() { return foo();
} public int AnotherBarFunction() { return bar();
} } class A2 extends A {
public int AnotherFooFunction() { return foo();
} public int AnotherBarFunction() { return bar();
} }

Is it better to keep the code in this fashion, or to swap out those virtual methods as static methods? (In Java, everything non-final/non-private is considered virtual, right?) According to the Designing for Performance section in the Android Developer Docs, I should swap out these virtual methods for static ones. So the above becomes:
public class A {
public int foo() { return 0; };
public int bar() { return 1; };
} class A1 extends A {
public int AnotherFooFunction() { return A.foo();
} public int AnotherBarFunction() { return A.bar();
} class A2 extends A {
public int AnotherFooFunction() { return A.foo();
} public int AnotherBarFunction() { return A.bar();
} }

Is this how it "ought" to be? I fully realize that I may be misinterpreting this paragraph in the docs.

Android :: Default Adjust For Window Soft Input Mode

May 9, 2009

I got confused about whether the default value for android:windowSoftInputMode[1] was adjustResize or adjustPan and thought I might be able to help someone avoid similar confusion. The "Updating Applications for On-screen Input Methods" blog post[2] states that pan and scan is the default mode because it is the safest for existing applications and resize is often the preferred screen layout. But I believe it's a little more complicated than that.

If the outermost View in a layout is a ScrollView then it appears that the default is actually adjustResize. And this makes sense: if the View lives inside a ScrollView then it probably knows how to resize itself. I'm mostly basing this statement on trial and error, so it would be great if someone could confirm or correct me. Maybe this should be mentioned in the documentation at [1]? Or state that it is recommended that applications specify one or the other, rather than depending on the default?

Android :: Window Soft Input Mode Not Working Properly With ListView

Nov 9, 2010

I have a layout with a ListView that contains EditText objects that can requestFocus() when the user chooses to edit the list item. I make sure to call setSelection() on the ListView when this happens, and then have the EditText request focus and then use InputMethodManager.showSoftInput to show the soft keyboard. However, when this happens, the list view is being resized correctly, but the selected list item remains below the fold and the user has to scroll up. This is working properly on 2.2, but is failing on 2.1. Any ideas for making sure the list selection remains visible?
