Android :: Getting Device Characteristics And Network Information

Jul 1, 2010

I am developing a context aware mobile application. I need to have information about the capabilities of terminal devices and network characteristics such as current bandwidth. My question is, are there APIs in android to access this information?

Android :: Getting device characteristics and network information

General :: Why Does 2G Network Provides More Information Than 3G

Feb 22, 2012

In my application, I want to collect the surrounding cell ID and LAC on my Android phone (to estimate the location).I use the telephonyManager.getNeighboringCellInfo() function which returns a list of NeighboringCellInfo.

If the phone has enabled the option "use only 2G networks" I receive the correct list but if this option is not enabled (connecting also on 3G networks), the NeighboringCellInfo has "-1" for cell ID and LAC for the whole list.

why 3G networks provides less information than 2G ? Is there some technical reason ? Can I still get the cell details on 3G ?

Android :: OS Push Information About Network Connecting Status To Application?

Mar 4, 2010

I need some advices about the Android OS and application.i wonder if the Android OS is able to push network connecting status to applications.(I found applications can get a network connecting status from android OS. But I can't find reverse cases.)However, I am thinking android OS may push network connecting status to applications.when application is installed on android os, is it possible to register something for monitoring phone's network status on android os.Because I want my application can receive phone's network status from android os.(not by asking directly to android os.) It means: when phone's network status changes, does android os automatically informs phone's network status to application?I'm sorry my English writing is bad TT;

Android :: Location Device And Information Usage

May 8, 2010

I have a few questions regarding the usage of localization in android applications: Are there any interfaces available to find out when an application uses location information? Is it possible to know if the application is using coarse or fine grained location information? Is it possible to detect which type of localization is being provided, i.e. gps vs. wifi? And if the answer to any of the above question is yes, how? You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Developers" group. Android :: Retrieve Device Information On Droid / Where To Find It?

Feb 4, 2010

My program is targeting Android 1.5. I would like to retrieve system information about the device itself. I have found very few helpful classes by searching the APIs. the best I've found so far is the Runtime class and a few Build.* system properties.

I would like to be able to get information like the total amount of memory on the device, the amount of free memory (which I do not know if the Runtime class is actually giving me, since it specifically refers to memory available to the JVM) along with information about the processor.

Is this information available, and if so, where can I find it?

How can i get device information from nonrooted device with python script? As I understand python don't have API like os.android.build in Java.

I need to get system information from device, such as cpu frequencies, gpu vendor and other (like in Antutu and another benchmarks).

I know how to write python script with $getprop information from shell, and from buil.prop file in the system files, but it isn't enough. I also know how to get these information with shell command and busybox installed, but I shouldn't root them.

Android :: Sync Information And Future Information

Jul 7, 2010

I am a Mac user (photographer/ videographer). I also rely heavily on my iPod Touch when mobile (i can often find a wifi signal when i am out and about). I use iCal on the Touch and iCal on my Mac as well as the address book on both everyday and as a Mobile Me user, my two devices sync so everything is mirrored and up to date. I also HATE AT&T for their terrible signal strength and coverage and have been a loyal Verizon customer for many years and this is why I don't have an iPhone. Okay, all that being said, is there an easy way to still use everything I love and rely on with my Mac (the calender and address book, mainly) and easily sync all of my existing information and future info to an Android based device? How easy is it to use an Android device with a Mac? I don't want to have to manually re-enter my entire address book into a new device.

HTC Droid Eris :: Home WiFi Network And Android 2.1 Device

Jun 5, 2010

I have an Eris with Android v. 2.1 and a Belkin 54g router. The phone lists my home network in its list of of wifi networks. When I press the entry, an info box says that signal strength is good and security is open. (for the purpose of trying to have my phone connect). When I press "connect," it says "Obtaining IP address." Then after a couple of minutes, it says "Unsuccessful."

My phone has connected to other WiFi networks with no problem; indeed, it has done so automatically, with no effort on my part. My router assigns IP addresses via DHCP. It also broadcasts its SSID, which the phone recognizes.

We have multiple Android phones, including my Incredible, in our house on our wireless network. Is there a way to assign a name to each phone so that they are identified on the router like computers and other devices are? Currently the Android phones just show up as "unknown" device. The Wi-Fi is secured with 128-bit encryption, so I'm not concerned with the neighbors connecting, but it would be nice to be able to see which phones are on the network at any one time.

So I am wondering how to hide or protect my phone when it's plugged in, just charging or as a disc drive. I could use a wall charger but when I want to do file transfers, I am not sure if anyone can access my phone (Samsung S4). I am not sure what kind of network our company is on, when I log in from home, it comes to a SSL-VPN screen, another says Sonic Wall. Today I tried the properties option in the folder I had open with my phone and there was no "no share" option that I could see

General :: How To Select Preferred Network Operators Automatically From Device

Aug 18, 2011

I want to select preferred network operators automatically from device. After I search for it, I found following:

Code:
final int EVENT_AUTO_SELECT_DONE = 300;
Message msg = mHandler.obtainMessage(EVENT_AUTO_SELECT_DONE);
phone.setNetworkSelectionModeAutomatic(msg);

So I need an instance of class "Phone". I tried this:

Code:
String phoneFactoryName = "com.android.internal.telephony.PhoneFactory";
String phoneName = "com.android.internal.telephony.Phone";
Class phoneFactoryClass = Class.forName(phoneFactoryName);
Class phoneClass = Class.forName(phoneName);
Method getDefaultPhone = phoneFactoryClass.getMethod("getDefaultPhone");
Object phoneObject = getDefaultPhone.invoke(null);

But the method "getDefaultPhone" can only called by looper.

Next I tried this:

Code:
String phoneAppName = "com.android.phone.PhoneApp";
Class phoneAppClass = Class.forName(phoneAppName);
Method getInstanceMethod = phoneAppClass.getMethod("getInstance");
Object phoneObject = getInstanceMethod.invoke(null);

But I get a ClassNotFoundException.

General :: No Network Timeout When Connection Lost On Device But Works In Emulator

Feb 14, 2013

I'm developing an App that sends keep-alive packets to its server to ensure the connection is still alive.

The server is java based and thus easily to run. I run the server on a virtual machine (Windows 7). After my App is connected and the first keep-alive packet is received (it displays a message in its console output) I disable the network interface in Windows. This step is very important because by disabling it, there is no way to send any packet back to the client informing it about network changes.

The clients are configured to send every 25 seconds a keep-alive packet, so you don't need to wait long.

When you use the sample JavaClient on Windows 7 it takes less than a minute after the keep-Alive packet and an exception is thrown which triggers reconnection (which currently can't occur). This is the expected behaviour.

When you use the sample Android App on an emulator (tested Android version 2 and 4) it is the same behaviour. So in less than a minute after the keep-alive packet it recognises that the connection is dead, throws an exception, this triggers reconnection.

Problem is now when this App runs on a real device (tested several, Xpearia Arc S, one Cyanogen Mod 4 on Galaxy S3 and my Galaxy S3). I've waited 5 minutes, but there was no exception. This behaviour is reproducable.

Since this is a sample App, it uses no wakelock or service, so to test it is important to have it in foreground all the time (don't switch to other Apps or homescreen) and increase your display timeout to a few minutes to ensure that it doesn't go off. Use Logcat-Output to get informed whats happening, because there is no output in the App itself.

Now Sample-Code is in the attachement. Something had gone wrong. The Code consists of 3 Eclipse projects which you can easily import.

Android :: To Get Accurate Device Location From GPS Or Network In Android

Mar 11, 2010

I am trying to determine the most accurate location of a device, in the shortest time possible.I am storing the data as a geopoint, and have it displayed on a mapview.The last time I activated the GPS on my device and let it get a location lock, i was approx 80 miles from where I am now.I have a location manager setup and a location listener.If I do this, I get NULL. myLocOverlay = new MyLocationOverlay(this, mapView); GeoPoint test = myLocOverlay.getMyLocation(); but in the next couple of lines; myLocOverlay. enableMyLocation(); mapView.getOverlays().add(myLocOverlay);With this, the overlay on the map shows the current location. It is using the Network provider, but is also attempting to get a GPS fix (it can't as I am indoors and no where near the top floor).If I construct the geopoint like this Short of getting the geopoints from both GPS and Network and then comparing them, and disregarding the GPS result if it is say 1 mile out of the Network location - i'm a bit stuck. why doesn't getMyLocation() work, shouldnt that return the GeoPoint of what myLocOverlay is showing on the mapview?

Android :: Android To Open Network Connection On Specified Network Interface - Network Type

Mar 6, 2009

I have been looking at the ConnectivityManager class documented at http://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/ConnectivityManage... .

I would like to know if an Android application can open a network connection (socket) on a specified network interface [on a device supporting multiple network interface types WiFi, Cellular, WiMax etc] ? I am looking for the capability for an application to open a socket on a given type of network for example over WiFi network or over 3G Cellular Data network.

If this is possible in Android, how would I code this requirement within the API Framework ? The ConnectivityManager enables an application to learn about available network connections and currently categorises them as either TYPE_WIFI or TYPE_MOBILE.

There is a member function in the ConnectivityManager class called requestRouteToHost(int,int) [url] which "Ensure that a network route exists to deliver traffic to the specified host via the specified network interface. An attempt to add a route that already exists is ignored, but treated as successful." Sounds like this would install an IP routing table entry to reach a given host via a specified network interface type (WiFi or Mobile). After calling this would it be sufficient for an application to open a socket and connect to the desired destination address ?

Or perhaps the application needs to bind() a socket to a local address of a network interface of the desired type (WiFi or Mobile) Or by setting a socket-level socket option of SO_DONTROUTE ?
