Android : EditText Items In A Scrolling List Lose Their Changes When Scrolled Off Screen

Jun 14, 2010

I have a long scrolling list of EditText items created by a SimpleCursorAdapter and prepopulated with values from an SQLite database. I make this by: cursor = db.rawQuery("SELECT _id, criterion, localweight, globalweight FROM " + dbTableName + " ORDER BY criterion", null); startManagingCursor(cursor); mAdapter = new SimpleCursorAdapter(this, R.layout.weight_edit_items, cursor, new String[]{"criterion","localweight","globalweight"}, new int[]{R.id.criterion_edit, R.id.localweight_edit, R.id.globalweight_edit}); is.setListAdapter(mAdapter); The scrolling list is several emulator screens long. The items display OK - scrolling through them shows that each has the correct value from the database. I can make an edit change to any of the EditTexts and the new text is accepted and displayed in the box. if I then scroll the list far enough to take the edited item off the screen, when I scroll back to look at it again its value has returned to what it was before I made the changes, ie. my edits have been lost. In trying to sort this out, I've done a getText to look at what's in the EditText after I've done my edits (and before a scroll) and getText returns the original text, even though the EditText is displaying my new text. It seems that the EditText has only accepted my edits superficially and they haven't been bound to the EditText, meaning they get dropped when scrolled off the screen. Can anyone please tell me what's going on here and what I need to do to force the EditText to retain its edits?

Android :: ScrollView With EditText - Scrolling In EditText

May 14, 2010

Our app (WordPress for Android) uses a ScrollView for the new blog post view. The issue is that if a user writes a lengthy blog post in the EditText, they are unable to scroll inside of the EditText because the ScrollView seems to be taking over the scrolling action, even when you are in the EditText.

Here's the layout XML (the EditText in question is @id/content):

Android :: Coming Calendar Items List On Home Screen?

Apr 26, 2010

I have been considering a new phone since my 3rd iPhone suffered it's demise and is no longer under warranty (1st Apple update bricked, 2nd stopped functioning, 3rd touch screen has gone wonky). So I have a choice to buy a new iPhone (or refurb) or go Android.

So far I have been impressed by the Android that my co-workers have. Seems very response, seems very snappy, seems pretty polished. I do have a couple questions: Is there a way to get a home screen of the droid to list out the next coming calendar items? I miss this feature from the BB and WiMo sets. Same with emails.

Android :: EditText Lose Focus When Keyboard Appears

I make ListView that has some items that has one EditText and one ImageButton. When touch the EditText in ListView's Item, Keyboard was appeared but EditText lose focus. What can I do for resolve this problem? I can use ScrollView instead of ListView by addView in ScrollView. And in ScrollView, when I touch the EditText, keyboard was appeared and EditText keep the focus. But I must optimize the list because the list may has many items. In ListView, I can optimize list in getView. But in ScrollVIew, there was not way to optimaize list. So, I must use ListView.

Android :: Programatically Scrolling An EditText

Feb 13, 2010

I'm writing a simple caesar-encryption-activity. Two EditTexts on screen, one clear-text, one crypted.

Here's an example for the crypted EditText - the cleartext one is similar.

CODE:...................

Now when entering cleartext I have an TextChangedListener running that programatically crypts and fills that crypto-EditText. So far, so good.

When the cleartext entered gets really long, the cleartext-EditText scrolls with my imput, but the crypto-EditText stays at the top of the text. I'd really like the crypto-EditText to scroll so that it always shows the bottom line of its content.

How can that be done, preferably from the onTextChanged()-Method of the TextWatcher?

Android :: Items Are Shrank When While Scrolling View

Jun 8, 2010

I found strange behavior in ListView. I have ListView of TextView except from one entry that contains ImageView. when i on of the items is touched and scroll up and down the image is re-sized to about 2/3 its original size! Usually, the image remains in this smaller size when the user lifts his finger and stops scrolling. The original size can be restored by tapping your finger on any of the empty list cells.

Android :: Enable Scrolling Within EditText That Is In A ScrollView

May 17, 2010

Our app (WordPress for Android) uses a scrollview for the new post view, where a user enters in their new blog post. There's quite a few fields on this view, including a large EditText for the post content field.

It appears that when an EditText is in a ScrollView, the ScrollView takes over the scrolling action, so the user can't scroll within the EditText area if they are writing a large post. What can be done so that scrolling will work both within the EditText and the ScrollView?

Here is the layout xml for this view, The EditText that needs the scrolling is @id/content:

Android :: Scrolling EditText On ScrollView Programmatically

Jul 19, 2010

I am trying to make a non-editable EditText that is placed in a ScrollView and scrolling is controlled programmatically (when a left/right fling is detected).

Here's my simple layout:

CODE:..........

And here is my simple program:

CODE:.............

So, to explain it simply, I have two custom simplegesture classes that I attached to the EditText and the ScrollView. For the EditText, I'm trying to detect a left/right fling and when detected, I'm scrolling the it up 1 page up/down. The custom simplegesture attached to the ScrollView is to disable finger scrolling.

Here's a screen shot after a right fling was done: http://img830.imageshack.us/i/textcut.png/

I kinda works right now but I have two questions:

How do I control the scroll so that lines won't get "cut-off" (please refer to the picture above where the first line on the screen is a bit "cuf-off"). Why when I scroll the page up/down programmatically, the EditText is auto select-all (please refer to the picture above where the whole screen turns orange after scrolling)? Why when I changed MyGestureDetector to detect fling on the Y-axis (vertical fling) and programmatically scroll the EditText, it doesnt' work? It wouldn't work even if I made the change in ScrollGestureDetector too. Does it have something to do with the behaviour of the ScrollView?

Android :: Android - Continue Scrolling In ListView With Clickable Items In Rows

Nov 19, 2010

I've been trawling the internet looking for an answer for several hours, but I can't seem to find anyone who has been able to solve this. I've got a listview which uses enter code herea custom adapter. A row looks like this. The list is filled by an array. Everything works great. Now, I want the ImageView and the ToggleButton to react to clicks, so I implement the OnClickListener in my adapter, put the items position in each view's tag, and then I set their onclicklistener to this. Works great, except now I can't use the onListItemClick for starting an activity for the item! OK, I say, I just make the relativelayout holding the text in the middle there use the same onclicklistener. Works great. Everything is clickable, and life is good.

EXCEPT! Now, when I scroll the list, I cannot "continue" the scroll by just flinging again. This causes the scrolling to stop, and I have to fling once more to get it going again. It seems the onclick-thingy causes the fling-motion to be interpreted as a tap or something (it does not trigger the logic within onClick).
I know that this is possible by just going to the phone list on my HTC Hero, which has exactly the kind of layout and behaviour I want from my app. This app even seems to have the onItemClickListener working. So how can I make sure the list keeps scrolling, and still be able to click the togglebutton, listitem and the imageview? I've been stuck on this all day, and it's giving me a headache

Android :: Find Item In List Without Filtering List But Just Scrolling To That Item

Oct 17, 2010

Trying to implement simple dictionary. I want to make it so while the user is typing in the EditText box the list to scroll automatically to the best match. I don't want it to filter the list. For example if the user types "s" in the EditText I want the first word that s/he sees under the EditText box to be the first word in the dictionary that starts with "s." But the user should still be able to slide up and down and to be able to see the entire list of words. It is basically like a go to functionality. I used ArrayList to store my list of words. The data is in res/raw/data.xml file. Here is my onCreate method
@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
wordListView = (ListView)findViewById(R.id.wordList);
myEditText = (EditText)findViewById(R.id.myEditText);
words = new ArrayList<Word>();
arrAdap = new ArrayAdapter<Word>(this, android.R.layout.simple_list_item_1, words);
wordListView.setAdapter(arrAdap); try {
InputStream inSource = getResources().openRawResource(R.raw.data);
DocumentBuilder builder = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance().newDocumentBuilder();
Document doc = builder.parse(inSource, null);
NodeList wordsList = doc.getElementsByTagName("eng-bg");
int length = wordsList.getLength();
for(int i = 0; i<length; i++) {
Element entry = (Element)wordsList.item(i);
Element eng = (Element)entry.getElementsByTagName("english").item(0);
Element bul = (Element)entry.getElementsByTagName("bulgarian").item(0);
Element id = (Element)entry.getElementsByTagName("ID").item(0);
String english = eng.getFirstChild().getNodeValue();
String bulgarian = bul.getFirstChild().getNodeValue();
int wordId = Integer.parseInt(id.getFirstChild().getNodeValue());
Word word = new Word(bulgarian, english, wordId);
addNewWord(word);
} catch (ParserConfigurationException e) {

Android :: Padding List Items?

May 31, 2010

I have a list where i basically need a hierarchy of items. Any children of an item would be padded slightly, as to easily distinguish their parent item. How could this be achieved? Note that i could, if needed, make each parent show no children, and then when the parent is clicked, a new list containing all of it's children is loaded. This however requires more clicking to display information than i would prefer. Also, the items themselves will contain graphics and whatnot (to show a drag'n'drop button, etc), so it would be best if it visually appeared as if the item itself had a margin, rather than the contents of the item being padded.

Android :: List With Grayed Out Items

It is also 'grayed out' or the like to indicate that it cannot be selected the next time the list is displayed. I have seen the isSelectable() override in Adapter, but I believe this causes the item to be treated as a separator, which causes visual problems. And I have not found a way to 'gray out' an item.

But now, when i select an item using scroll wheel, or when I click an item, the original colors for selecting/clicking do not override my custom backgrounds (I can see the original color below the one I set).
How can I set the original colors for these states?

Android :: Two Selectable Items In Each List In ListView

Dec 16, 2009

The way I want it is, per row there will be a text and is followed by a right arrow button, so that the user can click on that button to edit the content of that row. If the user is using the keypad, by using the left and right buttons on the keypad, he should be able to select the textview or the Button in that particular row. I have seen this in a couple of apps. The way I see that working on those apps appear as if they are maintaining two lists in parallel.

The reason i felt it this way is, if I am on row 1 of the list and if I press the right key on the phone keypad, then the right arrow button will get highlighted and now if I use the down key or if I keep pressing the down key, then the focus will scroll through that arrow button only as if that is an another parallel list constructed. I don't know if that is a good way to do it. I tried many for getting this to work, but couldn't succeed.

Android :: Displaying List Items In ListView

android:layout_height="fill_parent" xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" >

android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="Refresh" android:layout_x="209px android:layout_y="7px" >

The main class does nothing but drawing the layout. I've got the following class and layout for the listitems:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<TextView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:padding="10dp" android:textSize="16sp" >

import android.app.ListActivity; import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.View; import android.widget.AdapterView;
import android.widget.AdapterView.OnItemClickListener; import android.widget.ArrayAdapter;
import android.widget.ListView; import android.widget.TextView;
import android.widget.Toast;

public class BTListView extends ListActivity {
@Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setListAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.list_item, COUNTRIES)); ListView lv = getListView();
lv.setTextFilterEnabled(true); lv.setOnItemClickListener(new OnItemClickListener() {
public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int position, long id) {
// When clicked, show a toast with the TextView text
Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), ((TextView) view).getText(),
Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); } } ); }

Countries is just an array with a list of countries, some dummy values. Now, how do I make the list items of the BTListView class go in the ListView (with @+id/listview) of the main class? Now my list works, but it isn't clickable anymore. This is the code:
ListView lv = getListView(); lv.setTextFilterEnabled(true);
lv.setOnItemClickListener(new OnItemClickListener() {
public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int position, long id) {
// When clicked, show a toast with the TextView text
Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "lolwat", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
