Android :: Decimal Only Keypad

Apr 27, 2010

I want to have input type for the text boxes that only takes numbers and decimal point. Input type of Number or Decimal, still brings the full keypad and the buttons are small. Input type of Phone does the trick, but not all phones have a comma or a dot to enter the decimal point. What is the best way around? How To Convert ASCII Character To Decimal Number In Android

Jul 28, 2013

I'm working on an Android app. I have a TextView which contains an ASCII character. This character changes every 2 hours. I need to be able to read this character and convert it to decimal number, and then write it to an another TextView. So let's say the character is "[" and it's decimal value is 91. 2 hours later this character changes to "U" and it's decimal value is 85.

what kind of code should I use in my app to be able to convert ASCII character to decimal number?

Android :: Allow Only Decimal Numeric Input / Use Phone Soft Keyboard?

Apr 21, 2010

I am trying to do something that I thought would be simple, yet I still haven't found the right approach. I have a Edit Text field that should only accept unsigned decimal entries. Using android:input Type="number Decimal" in my layout xml file achieves this, however the soft keyboard that is raised with this input Type is the standard keyboard but just uses the alternate view with the number row on top. This is far from ideal for a field that only allows numbers. A much better soft keyboard for numeric entry is the "phone" one. It has all of the numbers and a decimal. Perfect!! Well, except that for the life of me I cannot figure out how to use both the phone keyboard AND allow only numeric entry. I've tried everything I can think of but if I use the phone soft keyboard then the input field also allows things like "(" and any of the other symbols available on that keyboard. Is there any way to get the nice big numeric buttons of the phone keyboard along with only allowing decimal entry? Catching And Stopping One Decimal Point Error

Aug 9, 2012

Alright how does one catch and stop a one decimal point error? The user inputs a single . and that is all; you can not allow that because you will be doing math with that input.if you have this in your xml file:

Code:
<EditText
android:id="@+id/edittext01"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:inputType="number|numberDecimal"
android:lines="1" >
</EditText>

and the user types just one decimal and nothing else the program will blow up.I tried the following code but the program blows up at the second IF.At first the two IFs were just one line, they got broken up to see where the problem was As you can see if the length of the user input is only 1 we check to see if it is only one decimal only

The program blows up at the second IF, but errx is a STRING.I used the Log.i to see how far to program went. And the errx is a "."

Code:
if (stop == 0) // checking for one decimal only and nothing else
{
String errx =null;
errx = (edtxt01.getText().toString());
Log.i("ONE DEC:", "START OF IF xxxx: " + errx);
if (edtxt01.length() == 1 ) // *********** 1st if
[code]...

Android :: Onscreen Keypad Interactions

Apr 14, 2009

I've seen with the onscreen keypad, the application does not seem to be notified that the OSK has been brought in front of it.I would like to be able to change the layout of my screen so that relevant information is visible when the keypad is brought to the fore.I have information onscreen that changes as the user types in a number.Also, the implementation of the OSK in landscape mode completely breaks the functionality of our application since the OSK takes over the complete screen. It would be much better for us if a 12-key numeric keyboard were available on one side of the screen and leave the other side available to the application. Can there be layout qualifiers such as we have with layout-land- keyshidden...such as layout-land-osk?

I want to specify in code to move to specific activity after pressing back button on android keypad how I can accomplish this. Now I ot the solution to my prob onBackPressed() works after 1.6 version for previous versions we need use:
public boolean onKeyDown(int keyCode, KeyEvent event) method
My code for this solved prob is

@Override public boolean onKeyDown(int keyCode, KeyEvent event) {
if (android.os.Build.VERSION.SDK_INT < android.os.Build.VERSION_CODES.CUR_DEVELOPMENT && keyCode == KeyEvent.KEYCODE_BACK && event.getRepeatCount() == 0) {
// Take care of calling this method on earlier versions of
// the platform where it doesn't exist. onBackPressed(); }
return super.onKeyDown(keyCode, event);
} //@Override public void onBackPressed() {
// This will be called either automatically for you on 2.0
// or later, or by the code above on earlier versions of the
// platform.

Android :: Disable Keypad Or Whole Keyboard Support On Activity?

Nov 2, 2010

I have a layout with lots of different imagebuttons on it. Application is developed in full-touch, so there should be no response to keyboard or keypad on all activities except one, where user can input his name.
Is there a way to achieve that?

I've checked on debug, keypress and keypad press result in onKeyDown event. I've set it to return 'false' for all keys. But, for some reason, android keeps selecting my imagebuttons when keypad is pressed. And pressing Enter key result in View.onClick event.

How to totally disable all keyboard input for activity? I use Motorola Milestone for tests - a slider with a keyboard.

Android : Want To Handle Back Button With Soft Keypad?

Nov 6, 2009

I have a simple edit control in my application and as expected the soft keypad comes up on tapping it. Now what I want to do is that when the user presses the back button, the activity should quit immediately without the soft keypad going down first. On handling the key event in my activity i found that the first 'Back' event is consumed by the keyboard and it does not even reach the activity. However once the soft keypad goes down, the events can be handled in my activity. Is there any way to override this behavior so that the back button first reaches my activity and I can quit immediately.

Android :: Alternative Phone Keypad Style Text Entry

Sep 22, 2010

I've had an HTC Desire for a few months now, and I just can't get used to full keyboard touchscreen style text entry. I like old school phone keypad style T9 text entry - I find it much faster (well, once I've entered lots of extra words!) than a keyboard and like to be able to send texts with one hand.

However I'm not happy with the stock android keypad, and my phone has just received a new update that makes it EVEN WORSE.

For example, it appears to in fact be impossible to enter accented characters (e.g.). As I occasionally communicate in languages other than english this is horrendous. With the new update they've also removed the shortcuts to ! and ? and replaced them with the voice recognition button, a feature in Android which I have found to be totally pointless (most of the time after speaking something it just says 'processing' for ages, then either fails or comes up with nonsense. Far quicker to type! Whats the point?!?). It's also added some kind of auto correction which I can't work out how to turn off which will prioritise words that I haven't even typed because I guess it thinks thats a more popular word and I misspelled it and I then have to go into 'more words' to chose the bloody word I typed in to start with!

However it seems all the other alternative keyboards are more designed to replace qwerty. I tried SwiftKey for a little while and it's clever, but it's still all querty and I'm not sure I like all the autocorrection - often correcting something that WAS correct into something that isn't!

About to try HTC_IME once I've worked out how to install it, but are there any other phone-keypad-style text entry apps out there to replace the stock android? Just anything that works like, say, an old Nokia or Sony would be totally great. That can't be too much to ask can it?
