Android :: Connect Application To Remote Data
Jun 8, 2010
talk about limited information! I'm trying to get my Android application to connect to an online database to access information. There's quite a bit of info including geotags and these are going to be mapped on my app. The developer site has the very informative piece of information:You can use the network (when it's available) to store and retrieve data on your own web-based services.

I installed TunesRemote by Jeff Sharkey and cant get it to connect to my library. My itunes library is shared on my desktop. I have 2 airports and laptop that see it fine but the app just keeps searching. I tried manually adding the ip but that didn't work. I also tried sharing other library's on the LAN and turned off firewall. Didn't know if anyone has done this yet?

I'm making an Android Java app game (although this question applies to all languages really) and hope to release the first version soon. I'm nervous about how I save data in my game. My problem is that, if in a later update, I decide to store more data or store the same data in a different way, I need to be careful I don't lose or corrupt data for users that upgrade (i.e. I want users to be able to use data created by an old version in the new version, like their high scores from before). For example, say I want to save high scores in version 1.

I am trying to write an Android app to connect to an existing web service. I'm pretty new to web services in general, other than what I've done with this first web services (written with JSPs, Struts 1.x, and JAVA). This web service is connected to a document storage database. The user would first login to the service, then using search parameters (document title, type, etc.) the user would be displayed a list of possibly relevant documents. The user would choose a specific document from that list, and the service would then stream the entire document (pdf file) to the user for viewing. What methods are available to Android where I can make a request given some specific parameters, and be able to parse a response? The only thing I know of is HTTP, but my project leader (I'm a summer intern) is hinting that there are others available. I'm not sure where to start looking.

I need to explore the world "You wrote a killer application, but do you have an Android/iPhone/iPad client?".
My questions are:
1) which is the best way to send data to those devices? Soap and Rest as suggested here? Or are there some specific techniques? (My app is written in Delphi and I can expose data with webservices if needed)
2) For x-platform (where by x I mean basically apple products and android) development is there a tool? Or the only solution is write one client per platform that "embeds" a web application optimized for mobile devices?
3) which are the techniques for caching locally some data / working offline? Is it different in the 2 worlds or is it common?

We have an android app that currently sends data to a php script which writes to a mysql DB on the same server. We are thinking of using a scalable remote DB e.g. amazon RDS.The question is how does our android app write to these remote DBs? Do they have some kind of rest API, or do we have to send the data to the same php script on our server but use that to post to the remote mysql DB?

I needed to call a remote service. The service basically fetches data from the network. I am bind the connection once, and then I unbind the connection when the user is no more in that page. Everything works fine.Except that when I call the sa,e remote method for 17th time,it just does not call the service at all.It neither throws the DeadObjecti Exception. I have run out of ideas. Is there anything that I may be missing.

I was thinking of getting one and trying it out, but I don't know how often I would use it. What do you use it for? Can you watch Hulu on your home PC on your phone? Is it more of a work-related thing? Is it just for forgotten files?Just wondering how useful an application like this is to the normal day-to-day user.

Yesterday, I found a cool little device that doesn't require you to have an iPhone to be able to send infrared commands to pretty much anything. It connects to your home network either via wifi or ethernet and can control 3 IR emitters or 3 IR blasters or any combination of 3 of those. If I write an app for this thing, would anybody actually be interested?

The object passing between an Android service and the remote binder is happening through serialization of the object. If the service needs to return a very large collection, it seems very inefficient to use this. What is the recommended way to deal with this?

I want to create an application that can be interactive with another Android device that could be across the room or across the country. For example, imagine playing Tic-Tac-Toe; but I'm the X's on my phone and the O's are my brother on his Android phone. I think it can be done via application specific messaging. Looking to see if it is possible, and, if so, how to send a message from one application to another on another device.

I'm now trying to implement my own content provider. My original data was stored on network or local/remote file systems, so I want to provide data via input stream. I know that client may call ContentResolver.getnputStream to retrieve the input stream to access data. But I don't know how to implement content provider in this situation, I searched the Internet but all the tutorials for content provider are talks about how to expose data that stored on local database. how to expose data that stored on file systems using a content provider? what happened when client call ContentResolver.getnputStream? I want to know how to return an input stream to my client.
