Android :: Contacts App With Company Info

Jan 16, 2010

I am considering buying an Andoid phone, and I have checked out the features on my wife's Hero. On such a business phone.I expect a Contacts/PIM that can organize all my business contacts by their companies. I would say that Company as a PIM entry is the most elementary feature of a PIM.Today I have a Windows phone (WM5), which has a great PIM for business contacts, with email address, business phone, switchboard phone, web address, company name, business address, private address, etc, etc.On Andoid Market I find nothing similar. It is unbelievable! All I find is a Group feature, which is something completely different. This is a show stopper for me.How can Android work for business people? Does anyone know of a PIM with full business card features?

Android :: Custom Contacts Field With A Set List Of Values And Contacts Lookup Performance

May 28, 2010

I'm pretty sure it's not viable to do what I'd like to based on some initial research, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask the community of experts here in case someone knows a way.

I'd like to create a custom field for contacts that the user is able to edit from the main Contacts app; however, the user should only be allowed to select from a list of four specific values. A short list of string values would be ideal, but an int with a min/max range would suffice.

I'm interested in knowing if it's possible either way, but also wondering if it make sense to go this route performance wise. More specifically, would it be better to look up a contact (based on a phone number) each time a call or SMS message is received or better to store my own set of data (consisting of name, numbers, and the custom field) and just syncing contact info in a thread every so often? Or syncing contacts the first time the app is run and then registering for changes using ContentObserver?

HTC EVO 4G :: Search Contacts By Company (No 3rd Party App Needed)

Aug 3, 2010

The company directory is still not working in Android 2.2 at least on my EVO 4G. But the good news is that you dont need it to work. There is a better way. I kept thinking that Google was supposed to be the king of searching, so I could not accept the fact that you cannot atleast search by company name. After doing some digging I found out a way to find contacts by company name.Press the "+" sign next to "Phone" on your home screen then select "Widgets" next select "Google Search" then select "People" and place the search bar on your home screen. Now you can search your contacts by name, company, number, etc. You can select the contact and see the full contact info for that individual and dial the number from there. You can also have the search pull up related email, texts, etc. when you search for the individuals name.

General :: Updated To 4.3 Now Can't Bring Up Company Contacts On Keypad In Phone App (Galaxy S3)

Mar 6, 2014

I'm running 4.3 on my AT&T (not sure if that is relevant) Galaxy S3. A few weeks ago I updated it to 4.3 when I saw a message that an update was available.

I keep a lot of work contacts in the phone but over the years I've built a collection of "contacts" that have no first/last name but are simply just a "Company" field with a phone and fax number.

Before 4.3 I could use the keypad in the stock Phone app to spell out company names (e.g. I could pull up the number for "XYZ Widgets, Inc." by typing "XYZ", just like searching for a person's name).

Ever since 4.3 I've been unable to do this. I go into my contacts and they are still shown there. But they do not show up when I'm typing them out. So I have a workaround but it's cumbersome.

Any settings I can change to try to fix this? I took some screen captures of the menu options I have under "call settings" in the Phone app. Link: [URL]

I have encountered a problem with focused text fields in a WebView not showing entered text values. As long as a WebView text field has focus it will not show text or even the blinking cursor. You can select and highlight the text or unfocus the field to see it, but when it gains focus it will not show the text as if the foreground color of the text is white. The simplest code to demonstrate this is below. With the setTheme using a Light background, try typing values into the Email text field to notice that the text is not visible when the field is focused.

General :: Google Contacts Relationship Field?

Nov 10, 2012

at the bottom you see a "Add relationship" field. If you click Add relationship, you are presented with a list of relationships. In here I selected Father. There is then an input box next to it.

What are you supposed to put in there? I've already told Google this contact is my Father, even if I put his real name in as the contact details, it still gives me that option.

At first I thought perhaps it was for Google Now. For instance, my girlfriend is down as her full name, so when I say "Call my Girlfriend" it would call her. However it seems like that isn't the case.

I've noticed than when synching with Outlook Contacts on the PC, some fields are not copied to the phone, for example the 'car' field, which is an additional phone number field.

Other than this, My previous phone was a BB Storm2. At the moment, My opinion is that, THe HTC desire is faster than the bb, its browser much better, but for day to day 'real world' use, the bb is much much better. More reliable, and although less options, but gives you those that you realy need.

General :: Numbers Entered Into Contacts On LG L9 Doesn't Sync To Gmail Contacts Online

May 7, 2013

I've checked my phone's sync settings, synced several times, logged in and out of Gmail online to see if anything has been updated. No such luck. Icon by phone numbers saved on phone is a cell phone, rather than the letter "G" which typically represents contacts pulled from Gmail online. I've had this issue - I believe - with my previous Samsung. Although I've seen this question brought up before, the answers are typically not device specific or have not been useful and clear to follow.

As a new user, I had difficulty negotiating this site and finding the best place to post this. There is not an LG Optimus L9 Forum so, if there is a location where this post might encourage more visibility.

Android :: How To Initialize Media Recorder In Background?

Aug 5, 2009

I am building a camera app, where photos and videos are continuously being captured and saved to the SD card. The videos are short (few minutes), and their length are preset with setMaxDuration(). When Media Recorder.MEDIA_RECORDER_INFO_MAX_DURATION_REACHED is reached, the video is saved, and a new sequence is initialized with something like: The whole process works fine, while the main activity is in the foreground. But, when I go to another activity (e.g. settings), the video recording works in the background only until max duration is reached. The file is saved, but a new sequence can not be started because prepare() fails. setPreviewDisplay() needs to be there, but it doesn't like not having a proper surface to attach to. I tried to use a dummy Surface, a dummy SurfaceHolder, or reuse the Camera with mMediaRecorder.set Camera(), but nothing works. Is there a way to initialize Media Recorder in the background?

Motorola :: Android AudioRecord Fails To Initialize

Nov 12, 2010

I've been having an issue with using AudioRecord for Android. I've read as much as I can find online about it, but I cannot seem to get a good initialization. I have tried the Android 2.2 emulator, 1.5 emulator and my phone, an HTC Incredible running Froyo. The emulators and my phone fail initialization. I've tried sampling rates of 8000, 11025, and 44100, formats of CHANNEL_IN_MONO/STEREO and CHANNEL_CONFIGURATION_MONO/STEREO, 8bit and 16bit encoding (8 bit makes the getMinBufferSize fail), and Audio Source of MIC and DEFAULT. All result in the variable test becoming 0 after running a get state(failed initialization). It seems from everything I've read that this should correctly initialize the object. I have played around with the multiplier on buflen, to have it range from 512 (the result of the function) to 102400 because I had heard that HTC devices require something above 8192. For testing my problem I made a new, small project that recreates my problem as simply as possible. I pull out the constants needed into local ints then run the constructor and access the getState method for checking if it worked. Code...

Android :: Initialize Sender ID For C2DM Without Using A Hard-coded Value?

Oct 18, 2010

I'm adding Android C2DM to a Android library project. I started with the com.google.android.c2dm package that is included with JumpNote and Chrome To Phone. In order to use this package, you have to subclass the C2DMBaseReceiver service which takes the Sender Id as an argument to it's constructor. In JumpNote, this argument is initialized using a hard-coded static variable in a config class. However, in an Android library project, which may be used by multiple concurrently running apps I don't think I can use a hard-coded static variable (that is, I believe it could lead to problems when/if multiple apps are trying to access/modify the static variable). I tried to think of a way to initialize the Sender Id without using a static variable and am stumped so far.The obvious solution would be to use the Manifest or a Resource string or a combination of the 2. For example, in strings.xml I might have a "ac2dmSender" string, which is accessed in a meta-data child of the C2DMReceiver service declaration in the manifest. However, it seems that you cannot get a reference to the PackageManager or ResourceManager from a static context, so there is no way for me to then retrieve the meta data in such a way as to pass it in to the constructor of C2DMBaseReceiver.
