Android :: Changing Entry Point Activity To App Messes Up App Update

Aug 9, 2010

This is the second time this has happened to me now. I changed the starting activity of my app, and put out an update, and now the icon on people's phone will not open my app. The only way they can open it is through the downloads section of their Android Market app, or if they uninstall and reinstall the app, causing them to lose ALL their data. I have no problem with updates on my N1, but every other Android phone has a problem with this. Why?

Android :: Changing entry point activity to app messes up app update

Android :: Changing Launch Activity Seems To Not Work On Update

Apr 26, 2010

For a new update I am changing the start-up work flow for the application. Part of this is setting the "android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" from one activity to another in my manifest. When I run an update from what is on the market to what I download from my website the application starts in the Activity where it used to start before the update. When I un install the application and install it from the same package I got from my website it starts in the Activity where I have now specified it to start. Shorter version: Update fails to update launching activity, un install- reinstall does update the launching activity. Is this a known issue? Do I really need to add logic to correct for people who update the app instead of installing fresh? Asking people to un install for an update is not a viable option. Is there something I can do to clean out whatever is getting saved that is causing the app to launch with the incorrect Activity? Android :: Change Entry Activity Causes App Only To Open From Downloads Page?

The update worked perfectly with no problems on my N1, but I'm getting emails from users telling me that the only way they can open my app is from their Downloads page in the Android Market app. I have no clue what could be causing this behavior.

Android :: Service.startForeground() Messes With Scheduling?

Apr 8, 2010

I updated my app to use the "new" startForeground() method of Service. Now beta testers are complaining about the foreground app going slow. Is that a coincidence or does startForeground() mess with the thread's prio or does anything else but what is written below? Just as an additional information the background activity does some syncing, reports the progress to the notification using remote views and as it is not latency dependent I use (and did that before already) this: Process.setThreadPriority(Process.THREAD_PRIORITY_LOWEST);

Should I use another Priority? And if it makes any difference, how does that play with Android 1.5 devices?

Android : Italics Clipped In Widget - Messes Up Selection Order

Feb 8, 2010

I've got a button with italics text in an app widget and the last letter gets clipped when I set the width to wrap_content. It doesn't get clipped with fill_parent, but then that messes up the selection order.

Things I've tried: - space after my text - seems to get trimmed off automatically - layout_marginRight - paddingRight

Anybody know what's going on here? Is this a bug?

HTC Incredible :: Update Failed With Red Triangle With Exclamation Point

Nov 6, 2010

I rooted my DINC a while back using Unrevoked 3. When 2.2 became available via OTA, I kept refusing the update, because I wasn't sure if I could update to it from a rooted phone. My wife was using the phone one day when the update notice popped up again, and she proceeded with the update. Sure enough, the update ended up failing, with a red triangle and exclamation point.

After I rebooted the device, I never received another OTA update request. So I tried to unroot the phone, but clockwork seems to stick around. Just an hour ago, I tried to install the official 2.2 ROM (PB31IMG.zip). After applying the image, I get a green triangle, then the same red triangle with an exclamation point. I restarted the device, but now it boots into the white hboot screen, with the following info:

INCREDIBLEC XC SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.92.0000
MICROP-0417
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab

In response to some other event, I may want to go back to the first content. Would it be possible to switch the content of the activity this way without running another activity (I have another technical difficult in doing that)? I tried using setContentView( videoView), and then switching back with setContentView(T.layout.main), but it seems that, when going back to the main layout, all my buttons and text boxes are created again as they were new. Would it be possible to go back to the last state of all the controls?

Android :: Simple Example Of Changing Screen Brightness For An Activity?

May 30, 2010

There are apparently at least three different techniques for changing screen brightness in the Android OS. Two of them no longer work post-cupcake and the third accepted technique evidently has a bug. I would like to increase screen brightness at the start of a one-view activity then turn the brightness back to the user setting at the end of the activity. No buttons, no second view or second activity. Just a maxed brightness at start and a return to original brightness setting at the end of the activity. The examples of the current technique using WindowManager.LayoutParams that I have located range from 2 lines of code

WindowManager.LayoutParams lp = getWindow().getAttributes();
lp.screenBrightness = 100 / 100.0f;
getWindow().setAttributes(lp);

To several pages of source code and numerous activities. Is there a simple example of maxing the screen brightness at start that someone can provide a link to?

Android :: Can Update A List View In One Activity While Im In Another Activity

Oct 4, 2010

I currently have a tab layout with 2 tabs, one tab with a list view and one with the option make strings so I can add them in the list view. Both tabs have their own activity because this made the code much more structured, and I dont have to repeat my self later.

Lets say im in the tab that offer me to create an string, and i press the update list button, how do I update the list view without startActivity()? If i use startActivity(), it starts List.java, and instead of displaying the list in the list view tab, it takes full screen, which defies the purpose of the tab view. In other words, the startActivity() steals the focus from the tab view of the list, and sends it fulscreen.

I want to update the activity in my list view tab, without starting a new activity that goes to fullscreen, and doesnt update the one in the tab.

Android :: Changing Locale - Force Activity To Reload Resources

Apr 15, 2010

I have a language setting in my application. When the language is switched, I would like all the textviews etc to change language immediately. Currently I just change the locale in the configuration, so the language has changed when the user restarts the activity.

Solution to my problem would be to make each textview load the new resources each time the language is changed. Is there a better solution? Perhaps a neat way to discretely restart the activity? Or maybe just force reload of the resources?

Android :: Update Activity Textview After Changes From Another Activity

Nov 19, 2010

I have an Android activity that, onCreate(), will query a database and display the query results in textviews on the UI.The problem that I am having is at some point, users can open another activity and update the database. When they go back to the original activity, I would like for the text views to update with the new database information (so, I will re query the database and display the info).Another thing that I am willing to do is to take the new input from the user (in the new activity) and directly update the textview in the existing activity (without having the existing activity re-query the database). But I'm not sure how to do something like that either.Can someone please inform me on the best way to go about doing this? The only solution that I have found so far has to do with broadcast receivers, but I'm not sure if that is best suited for what I have to do.

Create New Activity Or Update View Of Existing Activity?

Dec 24, 2012

I am working on developing an app and I am not sure when should I use a new activity and when should I update the existing view.

For example, lets say I have a view that shows a multiple choice question.Now, when the user selects his choices and clicks on say "Evaluate", I want to show the same question view but along with the right answers and explanations for each option. So does that mean, I should send an Intent upon a click on Evaluate or I should just update the view (i am not sure how)?

If I send an intent and show a new screen, how can the user go back to the next question without displaying the answers? If I don't create an new activity, how can I update the existing view that is already displayed?

Android :: After Changing A Preference - A Setting - Text Showing Settings Doesn't Update

Apr 13, 2010

I will try to explain a simple app scenario: My app goes right to a 'main view'. In this main view I have inserted a 'TextView' which displays current settings created by way of the PreferenceManager. For simplicities sake, let's say I have a checkbox in my settings. When I first start my app - the TextView on my main view shows my checkbox setting correctly (true). Now I go to the settings menu, it pops-up, and then I change it to false. I go back to the main view and...no change. It still say's true even after I changed it to false. If I end the app and then re-start it - all is well and it shows my change.

Apparently the main view just stays in the background while I'm changing settings? How can I redraw or update the main view after I change settings?

General :: Can't Update Apps In Play Store After Changing Accounts

Jan 3, 2013

I am having an issue on my Asus Transformer Prime tablet. I had my account on there and downloaded a bunch of apps and games. My wife signed up for an account and we added that one and removed my account as she has taken over my tablet. LOL. The app/game says there is an update but when we go to the Play Store it will not allow us to update it, it only shows OPEN and UNINSTALL. If I add my account back onto the tablet the option for update is there.

Is there anyway to update the apps/games without my account being on there? I thought about just deleting the game and re-installing it under her account but that would erase all of her progress in the game.
