Android :: Any Experienced Greystripe Users?

Apr 6, 2010

I'm just experimenting with Greystripe, to see how the ads look in comparison with other providers. I can't get it working, though I'm sure I've followed the instructions to the letter.

- I've setup the application and got the unique identifier. It is shown as live in my account.
- I've setup a test device and entered the correct device details
- I checked and double checked my code.

No ads are ever returned. The call sdk.is Ad Ready() always returns false. It's been hours now since the account was setup. I get no error messages. It all seems rather vague, with a lack of support from their end.

Android :: Anyone Using Greystripe For Ads?

Nov 30, 2009

Just wondering if anyone is using Greystripe for ads. Does anyone know when ads should start appearing once you publish your app? I cannot get a response from Greystripe on this.

HTC Aria :: Experienced First Non Recoverable Crash

Jul 1, 2010

Just as I was starting to get comfortable that I had removed all the crap that I had added on the first day that was contributing to all the Force Close crashes, today I suffered my first complete hardware lockup. It happened after lunch when I was playing with a few apps, one or more of which may have been running in the background. No stupid apps like Venezuela or soundboards. Just fairly normal stuff like YouTube/Discovery mobile, maybe ems/fire scanner I can't remember.Played with the free 360 camera app and tried to take a reverse picture of myself.Must have hit the "search" button and that's where it froze. No combination of buttons of hold lengths would fix it. It wouldn't go to sleep and when I called it from my work phone it didn't ring or react in any way. I had to pry it apart and remove the battery, which some of you I'm sure know is no easy task in and of itself.I know that it's probably technically my fault for splurging on stupid apps on day one. I know that a factory reboot may possibly fix my problem(s). But I can't help but feel deja vu back to the days when I fell for Ubuntu and gave her all my patience.Don't get me wrong, if you check my other posts you'll see that I'm in for the long haul, and this isn't some "this sucks so I'm leaving" post. But I figured I'd post the seemingly first reported full system lockup mention and give my opinion. For now I'm not going to change anything. I'm going to see what happens next and then come back and report. Of course all discussion/suggestions/criticism is entirely welcome.

HTC Eris :: What's Easiest Way To Root For An Experienced User?

Jul 21, 2010

have leak #3 and I got the OTA update a few days ago.I would like to go to ROOT.using EvilEris 3.0 I'm seeing all sorts of ways to do this..and looking for the simpilist fastest way.I'm familiar with the "put a file in the root of the SD card" and re-boot method. Is that the easiest way to get going? If so - what file do I need? "EvilEris3.0.zip" or "PB00IMG.zip" (and if so - do I need a "latest" one)?

Android : App Not Showing Up For Evo Users?

Jun 8, 2010

I'm working on a project (Foursquare). I pushed a new version to marketplace last night, but it is not showing up in marketplace searches for Evo users. I've read about this happening to other apps, and one major reason seems to be if copy protection is being used (but it is not for the Foursquare app).

Anyone else have an idea why this is happening? Is there a set of permissions Evo doesn't support which may be blocking the app from showing up in marketplace?

Android : Any ScoreLoop Users Out There?

May 26, 2010

I'm implementing ScoreLoop for my game. There is a standard selection widget for the leaderboard type, which lets you refine the scores. By default, I get:

- Global Leaderboard - Your Country Leaderboard - 24h Leaderboard - search_list.nationality_iso3166_1 - search_list.nationality_iso3166_2

What on earth are the last two items? This list seems to come from ScoreLoop, rather than being anything configurable in the xml. I only want the first three in the list, is there anyway I can set this somewhere? I notice that other games that use ScoreLoop (like Jewels for example) only have the first three items also.

Android :: Sharing Data Between Users

Aug 25, 2010

I'm writing a game that includes an editor for users to create their own levels. I'd like players to be able to share the levels they've created with other players. I'm trying to figure out the best way of implementing that, and hoping for any advice on the subject.

One obvious option is to set up a server for sharing levels. The game would connect directly to the server to let players share their creations or download levels created by other players. This provides seamless integration and a good user experience, but I'd really prefer not to use this approach. For one thing, I don't want the cost and responsibility of setting up and maintaining the server. And I would be taking on a basically unlimited obligation; otherwise, if I decided to shut down the server a few years from now, the game would suddenly lose a large part of its value.

Another idea I had is to use the Android Market as the way to distribute sets of levels. That way, Google is taking care of running the server for me. Clearly there are programs that work this way, since I've seen lots of themes and expansion packs for particular applications in the Market. While this could work, I'm not very happy with it. Asking an ordinary user to sign up for a developer account on the Market and learn how to post files through it is unreasonable, not to mention they would have to pay $25.

The approach I'm currently leaning toward is allowing levels to be exported as ordinary files. People could then just email them to each other, post them on any website they wanted, etc. Ideally I would want to set up a file type association so they could simply open an email attachment or click a link in the web browser, and my game would automatically be launched to import it. I haven't yet looked into whether that's possible.

Android :: Can't Update Be Installed By Users?

Feb 22, 2009

I did an app called "Hello Yahoo" and today I made an update. But users said it can't be installed because the package is not signed correctly. And after that the old version can't even be uninstalled because the device thinks it is uninstalled already. I never experience that, but it is reported by many users. I do use a different keystore to sign it with the update. Is this the case? How can I fix this?

Android :: Users Getting Package Not Signed Correctly

May 2, 2010

A small percentage of our users are getting a package not signed correctly error when installing our app that was downloaded from the Market. They can't re-download from the Market, so we are having to get them to download and install it from our site, which works fine. It seems to happen to maybe 1% of our users, and only for our paid app, not for the free one (at least that we've heard of, naturally the paid users are going to contact us more than the free ones). I'm guessing it's a problem when the download is corrupted for some reason, but in that case shouldn't the Market let them re-download it and try again? Anyone else seeing this? Android :: Palm Users - What Calendar And ToDo App

May 4, 2010

I've used Palm phones for the last 10 years and I'm making the switch to Android soon. The Palm program I use the most (and rely on daily) is DateBk (by Pimlico). I've used DateBk for the last 4 years and love it.

One big reason I'm moving to an Android phone is to push all I can into the "Cloud." That way I can have everywhere access to my information and schedule and it's automatically backed up. So I really don't want to buy DateBk (even if it comes to Android) because it's not really a "Cloud" friendly program.

Is Google Calendar coupled with the free "Remember the Milk" app (or maybe it's $10 for Android users) a good replacement for DateBk?

Android :: Useful Switchers / Warning For Users / Message To Devs

Sep 10, 2009

Recently the Dev of the AWESOME app "Useful Switchers" made a change to his free app.If you update the app now through the marketplace, it will turn it in to a "trial version" which will expire Sept 14 2009. You will then have to get it for $0.99. Note that it won't be a better version, or a pro version, it will be the same thing. Here is what the Dev (turmeric on these forums I believe) says in the updated description in the marketplace:"Now I develop new version 2.0. If you donate, big thanks for support. I really need some money. I especially make smaller price ($0.99). This version is trial now (expired Sep 14 2009)."As you might imagine the reaction in the comments has been very harsh, and a lot of people are reducing their rating for the app. Before anyone attacks me (or others) with suggestions that we are freeloaders, pirates, or mean for trying to stop the Dev from profiting from his hard work, let me be clear; I _completely_ support any Dev's right to make money from their app. If it is valuable to me, I am even more than willing to pay for it. We aren't talking about a lot of money, it's only 99 cents, and useful switchers is a great app (I use it all the time, every day).

Most people in the MP comments are upset not that the Dev wants to make money, but that it seems like a tricky, underhanded way to do it. The app they have used will suddenly expire after an update. It seems almost like a bait and switch. Yes, the Dev does explain in the app description what will happen when you update, so users who updated without reading it really only have themselves to blame (Caveat Emptor after all). The Dev maybe could have gone about this better, perhaps making it clearer (large words in bold) that the app would change to trial software after the update, and maybe he could have extended the trial period (it ends VERY shortly), but still, it's there to read.
My_ problem with the Dev's actions are really more a problem with the Marketplace in general, and how Google and phone carriers are handling it. You see, I'm in Canada, and apparently in Canada we can't be trusted with our own money, so we can't have access to paid apps (yes, that's me being snarky). Many other countries are in the same boat. So, turmeric, I'm talking to you now (and all other Devs who might read this); Your app is great, and I would GLADLY pay for it... but I can't. Once it becomes a paid app I will not even be able to see it in the marketplace. Even if I were to send you a donation now, if I update the app it will stop working on Sept 14 and I will be screwed.

Some will argue that it's still the Dev's right to change it to a paid app, and boo hoo so sorry, too bad for me. Well, i agree 100%. I agree the dev has the right, but there is something else to consider... customer service and his reputation as a dev. There are LOTS of users who, if they update, will lose the app on Sept 14, and not be able to get the paid version because they can't access paid apps. These people are lost potential customers for _future_apps when they can eventually access paid apps. You will turn they away. So, what are the alternatives? Do what many other Devs have done. Make a free version and a paid "pro" version so those without access to paid apps can still get a very useful app. Or, if you don't like that, and insist on making the app a paid app only, surely there must be a way (as with software for computers) to use an unlock key to get the full version? that way users could download a free "locked" version from the store, and pay the dev separately through his web site for a key that could be typed manually into the app to unlock it.
